In 1975 CE, the main political power in this atlas is the Republic of India.
Aryabhata, designed and fabricated in India, launched on 19 April 1975 carrying experiments in X-ray astronomy, aeronomy and solar physics. It marked India’s first satellite mission.
The satellite was Indian, but it launched aboard a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket from Kapustin Yar; it was not an indigenous launch-vehicle success.

A national Emergency was proclaimed on 25 June 1975 and remained in force until 21 March 1977. Opposition leaders were detained and civil and political life was sharply restricted; the 1977 election was followed by India’s first non-Congress Union government.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s government declared a national Emergency, restricted civil liberties, censored the press and detained political opponents. Coercive sterilisation and demolition drives exposed how emergency power reached everyday life.
Voters removed the government in the 1977 election, marking both a severe democratic rupture and a peaceful electoral transfer of power. Debate continues over institutional complicity, resistance and the period’s social consequences.
