Independence and Partition, 1947

Read independence and Partition together: the new dominions, boundary decisions and the human consequences of displacement.

Independence in August 1947 ended British rule and created the dominions of India and Pakistan. Partition also divided Punjab and Bengal and brought displacement and violence on a vast scale. The legal transfer of power, the announcement of boundaries and the experience of families are connected parts of this history, but they are not interchangeable events.

The 1947 atlas is a dated, approximate historical view. It must not be read as the present-day frontier or as a complete representation of princely-state integration.

The law and the boundary were different steps

The Indian Independence Act supplied a legal framework for the two dominions. The National Archives’ teaching collection places that framework alongside the June announcement and the later publication of the boundary awards. Reading these dates separately helps explain why independence celebrations could occur before many people knew where a new line would run.

A map cannot contain the human story

Archival teaching materials include the disruption of lives and movement across the divided provinces. A line on the atlas helps orient readers, but it cannot represent the choices, losses or uncertainty people faced. Administrative records should be read alongside personal testimony, with care about what each source can and cannot establish.
