India conducts its first nuclear test at Pokhran
India carried out its first nuclear explosion at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan on 18 May 1974. BARC’s official retrospective describes Pokhran-I as a peaceful nuclear explosion experiment and a milestone in indigenous nuclear and engineering capability.
The event is described as India’s first nuclear test, not as the moment India became a nuclear-weapon state, which has a specific meaning under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
