The Indian Ocean tsunami devastates India’s coasts
The earthquake and tsunami of 26 December 2004 caused catastrophic loss along the Indian Ocean, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and India’s eastern and southern coasts. The disaster prompted India to establish a national tsunami early-warning system.
India’s early-warning centre became fully operational through INCOIS in October 2007. Global and India-only casualty estimates should not be conflated.
