Akbar’s court makes translation a political practice

Teams of scholars translated Sanskrit works, including the Mahabharata, into Persian for an imperial readership. Court debate and translation did not erase hierarchy, but they broadened the intellectual languages through which empire imagined India.

Akbar’s religious experiments are often compressed into the label Din-i Ilahi. The court’s larger project included debates, patronage, legal adjustment and the careful management of many elite communities.
