The Revolt of 1857

Follow the uprising from Meerut to Delhi, its varied participants and the shift from Company to Crown government.

The uprising of 1857 began in military cantonments and drew in wider civilian communities in several regions. Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur and other centres had their own leaders, grievances and experiences. Calling it only a military mutiny misses this wider participation; treating it as one uniformly organized movement also overlooks important differences in local aims and circumstances.

Participation was uneven, and different groups had different aims. The same atlas year may provide context for several phases of this longer uprising.

Meerut and Delhi formed an early connection

NCERT describes the outbreak at Meerut on 10 May and the arrival of sepoys at Delhi the next morning. Their appeal to Bahadur Shah helped give the rebellion a symbolic centre. The movement then developed through communications, local leadership and civilian participation whose relationships cannot be explained by one simple chain of orders.

Sources record both upheaval and perspective

Reports, proclamations, images and later accounts supply different views of the rebellion. NCERT asks readers to consider whose voice appears in each representation. Delhi Tourism records the city’s destruction and reconfiguration after suppression, reminding us that a political turning point also changed urban space and everyday life.
