Maratha Swarajya and Expansion

Trace Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation, connected forts and the later expansion of Maratha power.

Maratha history connects the creation of Shivaji Maharaj’s Swarajya with a later, more widely dispersed political order. Forts, revenue systems, coastal defence and mobile forces all mattered. The founder’s kingdom and the later power of the Peshwas and Maratha houses should be distinguished, rather than drawn as one centrally governed empire lasting unchanged across two centuries.

Modern Maharashtra is a geographic lens, not the frontier of Swarajya or the later Maratha confederated order. The map’s political footprints are approximate.

Terrain was part of the military system

UNESCO’s Maratha Military Landscapes joins twelve forts whose hill, plateau and coastal settings contributed to a connected defensive network. Their importance lies in relationships among routes, supplies and difficult terrain as well as individual walls. A fort was an operating node in a wider system, rather than an isolated symbol on the map.

Coronation and later expansion tell different stories

The Maharashtra Gazetteer supports the coronation at Raigad, a public assertion of sovereign authority. Later Maratha expansion took place under changing leaders and political arrangements. Reading the 1674 and 1818 atlas views together encourages questions about that long transformation without making later institutions identical to the founder’s state.
