Sher Shah’s interregnum reshapes the state Humayun recovers

After defeating Humayun, Sher Shah Suri reorganised revenue and communications across a powerful north Indian state. Mughal rule returned in 1555, but several Sur practices influenced the administrative system Akbar later developed.

Later memory credits Sher Shah with roads, caravanserais and a disciplined currency. These measures built on earlier institutions while creating models that the restored Mughals could extend.

Akbar’s court makes translation a political practice

Teams of scholars translated Sanskrit works, including the Mahabharata, into Persian for an imperial readership. Court debate and translation did not erase hierarchy, but they broadened the intellectual languages through which empire imagined India.

Akbar’s religious experiments are often compressed into the label Din-i Ilahi. The court’s larger project included debates, patronage, legal adjustment and the careful management of many elite communities.
