Mahavira reshapes an older ascetic tradition
Jain tradition remembers Mahavira as the twenty-fourth Tirthankara, associated with the wider Vaishali region and the renunciation of worldly life. Jain communities developed durable ethical disciplines centred on non-violence, restraint and liberation.
Buddhist and Jain traditions grew in dialogue with Brahmanical and other ascetic schools. Their success shows that intellectual life in the Ganga plain was plural and institutionally competitive.
