The First Battle of Panipat

Understand the 1526 battle between Babur and Ibrahim Lodi and why a victory did not instantly secure an empire.

At Panipat in 1526, Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi. The battle is a major chronological landmark because it opened the way to Mughal rule in northern India. Its meaning becomes clearer when read alongside what came before and after: a changing Sultanate landscape, further contests, and the later work of building an imperial state.

This page concerns the first battle. Atlas colours represent approximate historical relationships, not an exact battlefield layout or immediate conquest of all India.

A named battle is not a complete transition

Panipat’s district history distinguishes three major battles at the same location. The 1526 encounter belongs to Babur and Ibrahim Lodi; it must not be confused with the battles of 1556 or 1761. Even this well-defined date marks a military event, not the moment every region entered a new political order.

Follow the next reigns as well as the battle

The atlas’s Mughal account emphasizes that authority was rebuilt and expanded across successive reigns. Moving from 1526 to Akbar’s period reveals why the founder’s victory is only one entry point. Institutions, alliances and regional negotiations help explain endurance in a way that a single battlefield narrative cannot.
