Urban decline is a transition, not a disappearance
Large urban centres contracted after about 1900 BCE, but communities, crafts and farming traditions continued in changing regional forms. Current scholarship avoids explaining this transformation through a single invasion or sudden collapse.
Shifts in river systems, settlement patterns, trade and climate probably interacted over generations. The archaeological record supports movement and adaptation rather than the disappearance of an entire population.
